Clay figurines have become a popular folk art in China since 500 years ago. One of the most well-known patterns is the clay tiger that can make roaring sounds to ward off ghosts and monsters. Such craftsmanship has been listed as Chinese national intangible cultural heritage.

This DIY set includes an unfinished "naked" clay mould, brushes, six colors and palette. A perfect gift for kids and teens to inspire their imagination and creativity by coloring and painting their own sculptures. They can be as creative as they are on the mould, based on the original tiger patterns demonstrated in the pictures below or any other figures as they are inspired.

Description:
  • Package includes 1 mould, 6 colors, 2 brushes, 1 palette.
  • Mould:100% made of clay, 10cm(H)×9cm(L)×6cm (W)
  • Palette: plastic, 16.5cm×10.5cm
  • Brushes: plastic, 16.5cm(L)

Highlights:

  • The "tiger"'s head and body are connected like an “accordion”, so it can "roar" as you pull apart and fold in the two parts back and forth.
  • Supplied from the city of Gaomi in Shandong province, the birthplace and protected region of clay tigers.
  • Perfect birthday, holiday, christmas gifts for both children and adults who are interested in Chinese folk arts and sculptures.
  • Please use caution as the mould is as fragile as pottery or porcelain.
Did you know...?

Chinese people believe that there is a large Chinese character "王" on the forehead of the tigers. 王 in Chinese means "king" and therefore the tiger is believed to be King of the animals, and the symbol of courage, health and power.

In ancient times, people thought that children getting ill was caused by evil spirits and ghosts, so they sewed cloth into tiger figures to protect their children from illness and bring peace and luck. Also, families would give newborn babies hats, shoes or plush toys adorned with tiger prints and embroidery.
